Server troubles

I was pissed yesterday. The blog database, which is intrinsic to the blog was not accessible for whole of yesterday (my time).

I get up yesterday morning and access the site and I am given a nice little error page by WordPress which states that the database is not accessible and I should check my username and password.

I contact the hosting service (Symonds.net) who replies that they have changed the server and that DNS changes take time to propagate. Bah.. He said things should be fine in about 2 hrs. I waited. And I waited some more while the blog was still not accessible.

I shot off a mail again and he replies that it’s *my* ISP’s fault since they are not flushing their DNS cache and updating them.

So I waited. Then it struck me that the god darn server was accessible but only the database was not which would be local for the blog and hence DNS issues dont even come into the picture.

I immediately sent him a mail telling this and he realised it about the same time too. So he manually went into the server and fixed the issue. It seems the DB package was broken after the upgrade in which some DB authentication always failed. Humph.. So much for DNS trouble.

WordPress 1.5.2

I just upgraded to WordPress 1.5.2. It seems to have broken some things on the blog. Comments submission now leads to a blank page instead of returning to the post page.

Some of my plugins seem to have been broken too. They are not functionining correctly. I’ll have to sit through the plugins and sort them out. Arghh..

IPOD Help

I started using my Ipod yesterday but trouble struck at the second step. The installation, though a tad bit slow, completed smoothely. ITunes recognised my prized possesion :-D and gave me access to copy songs to it. But trouble struck at that point. It would not copy the songs according to the folders I had my music arranged in. So all my organisation right now lies to a waste.

I need to find out how to do that. Anyone have any ideas on how to achieve that?

Ipod Finally in my hands

Yaaaaay.. Today is independence day and it turns out I finally got the object I desired the most for the past year or so.

An Apple Ipod A gift from my sister. She had been on her honeymoon for the past fortnight and a day before she was to return, I asked her to get me one. :-)

It’s a 20 GB model which can store about 5000 songs. Though I had asked for one with a mono display, it seems the color display has become the default and mono display production has been stopped. Good for me :-D
It is awesome and I just still cant believe that I got one.

Woo hoo

Microsoft – Love it or Hate it?

Everyone loves to hate Microsoft. It is one of the favorite pastimes of Linux Geeks and users alike. I have done it and I accept it. Microsoft Windows the most popular operating system ever is also one of the most vulnerable. I have hated it when it did not something I wanted but behaved much like a cat doing it’s own thing.

However, I came across this interesting post which looks at Microsoft from a totally different perspective. Why it _might_ be targeted by virus writers, hacker et all. A pretty good read if only for light reading.

Email problems – Thunderbird

I am pissed. Though not sure who to be pissed at. Thunderbird (My email client), Gmail, or my ISP. It’s been 3 days since I started having email problems. I use only pop3 email accounts cos I hate web-mail.

But the problem seems to only be with Gmail.

Microsoft Windows = Bloatware

This is a very interesting which shows users how to run a very barebones instance of Microsoft Windows operting system. You run with only two services. But you can still surf the internet and do some other stuff.

Now I gotta try and see if I can play games on it. With most of my system memory available entirely for the game ;-)

First post of sorts

It’s really been awefully long since I last posted. What was to be a small break turned out to be awfully long. And even on returning back home, I havent been able to find time to post something here.

However, I have now decided to make sometime for my personal stuff and should be able to post regularly again.
Lets see how it all pans out.
